Western Australia's floral emblem — velvety green paws held on crimson stems from late winter into spring. Found in the sandy heath and banksia woodland of the south-west, and rich in nectar for honeyeaters.
Red & Green Kangaroo Paw (Anigozanthos manglesii) is the floral emblem of Western Australia, found in the sandy heath and banksia woodland of the south-west. Its velvety flowers are vivid green, opening from crimson-red stems and buds, and appear from late winter into spring. Each flower is shaped to dust visiting honeyeaters with pollen as they feed. A short-lived perennial, it grows from a low rosette of strappy grey-green leaves and sends up flowering stems to around a metre. Give it sun, sharp drainage and a dry summer.
