Ideal for shelter belts, revegetation and quickly establishing native canopy. Southern Salwood (Acacia disparrima) is a fast-growing wattle native to the coastal forests of eastern Australia, ranging from northern New South Wales through Queensland. It is a tall, slender tree reaching 10-20 metres in mature specimens, with a straight trunk, smooth grey-brown bark and a soft, open canopy of long, sickle-shaped phyllodes in silvery-green. From late winter into spring, branches are lined with cylindrical golden flower spikes that fill the canopy with soft yellow and attract native bees, butterflies and small honeyeaters. Long valued for its useful timber and rapid establishment, Southern Salwood is a quietly impressive shelter tree for larger native gardens, farm plantings and revegetation projects — a tree that earns its place through both pace and presence. ## Growing specifications - Origin: Subtropical coast of Queensland and northern New South Wales - Form: tree (long-lived perennial); height 5–15 m - Sun: full sun or part shade - Soil: sandy, loam, clay - Drought tolerance: moderate - Frost: light frost only - Coastal / salt tolerant: yes - Suited climates: subtropical, temperate, tropical - Flowering season: summer, autumn - Sowing season: spring, summer - Germination: 14–30 days - Seed pre-treatment: hot water soak - Attracts: native bees, birds - Garden uses: shade tree, fast screen, windbreak, revegetation - Notes: A fast pioneer wattle for warm climates. Pour just-boiled water over seeds and soak for 12-24 hours to soften the hard coat. 2. Sow seeds 5-10mm deep in a free-draining native seed-raising mix. 3. Keep soil lightly moist but not waterlogged until germination (14-30 days). 4. Pot on seedlings once they have several sets of true leaves. 5. Plant out in a sunny position with deep, well-drained soil and space to grow. 6. Allow 4-6m between plantings when used as a shelter belt or canopy tree. ## Care - Water regularly during the first summer to establish a strong root system, then reduce. - Tolerates a wide range of soils provided drainage is reasonable. - Use a low-phosphorus native fertiliser sparingly in spring if growth is slow. - Light formative pruning in the first few years encourages a straight, balanced canopy. - Best suited to larger gardens and rural blocks where it can reach full height. - Avoid planting close to drains, foundations or septic systems given its quick growth and root spread.
