Red & Green Kangaroo Paw (Anigozanthos manglesii) is the floral emblem of Western Australia, found in the sandy heath and banksia woodland of the south-west. Its velvety flowers are vivid green, opening from crimson-red stems and buds, and appear from late winter into spring. Each flower is shaped to dust visiting honeyeaters with pollen as they feed. A short-lived perennial, it grows from a low rosette of strappy grey-green leaves and sends up flowering stems to around a metre. Give it sun, sharp drainage and a dry summer. ## Growing specifications - Origin: Sandy heath and banksia woodland of south-west Western Australia - Form: perennial (short-lived perennial); height 60–100 cm in flower - Sun: full sun - Soil: sandy - Drought tolerance: moderate - Frost: light frost only - Coastal / salt tolerant: no - Suited climates: mediterranean, temperate - Flowering season: winter, spring - Sowing season: spring, autumn - Germination: 21–42 days - Seed pre-treatment: smoke water improves germination - Attracts: honeyeaters, birds - Garden uses: pots, rockery, mixed native border - Notes: Western Australia's floral emblem. Excellent in a pot where drainage can be controlled. ## Highlights - Western Australia's floral emblem - Velvety green paws on crimson stems, late winter into spring - Rich in nectar for honeyeaters and wattlebirds - Superb in pots, rockeries and sandy native borders ## How to sow 1. Soak seeds in warm water for 24-48 hours before planting to improve germination. 2. Sow seeds in spring or autumn in a well-draining seed-raising mix. 3. Lightly cover seeds with fine soil or sand, about 2-3mm deep. 4. Keep soil moist but not waterlogged until germination occurs (14-35 days). 5. Transplant seedlings when they reach 5-8cm tall. 6. Choose a sunny position with excellent drainage for best results. ## Care - Enjoys full sun and open air - bright light and good air circulation help prevent leaf spot and keep flower stems strong. - Needs sharp drainage - grows best in sandy or gravelly soils; avoid heavy clay or waterlogged spots to protect the rhizomes. - Feed and clean regularly - apply a low-phosphorus native fertiliser in spring, and remove old leaves or spent flower stems to encourage new growth. - Slender grower - flowering stems reach around 1m, ideal for pots, rockeries and mixed native plantings. - Avoid phosphorus-rich fertilizers - use specialized native plant fertilizers for best results.
